"Told to switch off mobile although i was waiting for sad news"

About: Vale of Leven General Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

I was attending the vale of leven hospital today for outpatient appointment. I was waiting in the waiting room when I recived a call on my mobile from my friend to say his gran passed away. While I was on a call a senior nurse stopped and told me to switch it off. Her attitude was not very nice and there was no clear guidelines to say not to use a mobile I would like to suggest clearer guidelines are displayed in outpatients A at vale of leven hospital

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear waterloo,

I am sorry to read this and hope that your friend is ok after the sad passing of his gran. You are right when you say that any guidelines of this sort should be made very clear so that patients such as yourself do not inadvertently use a phone where it may not be appropriate. That said, there are ways to let patients or visitors know about such guidelines at the time while maintaining a polite manner, therefore I am sorry that this was not the case in your experience.

I will try to find out what exactly these guidelines are and speak to colleagues to see how this is made visible to patients and visitors to the hospital in future.

Kind Regards,

Lorna
