"Not to be experienced again"

About: Lister Hospital

I was admitted to the Hospital for a Hysterectomy, my consultant was brilliant. Unfortunately by level of care changed dramatically, I was on 7B South for all of 24 hours and was advised at 7.30 pm while I was sleeping my bed was required for a more urgent patient that had to be close to the Theatres if required, I was clearly upset and shocked that you can be moved like this and did not want to be moved. I had not been out of bed at all at this stage and had only had a bed bath the previously day I felt weak and vulnerable . I was offered to go into the bay round the corner but felt due to huge operation I had undergone I needed quietness and privacy, I was then offered the Day Care Ward where I would have my own room, I queried would I have the same level of care as gynae the bed manager came to see me and advised of course I would. I was further advised they would move me in my bed so I would be more comfortable, at 10 pm the porter arrived with a wheel chair, I could get into a wheel chair as I could not even bend at this stage, the porter was rude and felt I was making an unnecessary fuss until my husband reminded them. I arrived in Day Care but unfortunately it is Day Care and the nurses are not gynae specialised nurses , they advised they only normally deal with broken bones/replacements hips on a daily turnaround hence the clue is in the name Day Care. The workstation was outside my room so the constant idle chatter from receptionist was quite hard to deal with when you wanted peace and quietness .I had quite long days of waiting for gynae doctors and nurses as they had to come from the main building. At no point in Day Care (Swift Ward) did I feel I was being looked after until once gynae sister now working in Day Care they showed the care and support I so desperately needed at this very emotional painful time, I could not have coped without them. I had to complain to a nursing assistant the room had not been cleaned especially the toilet, a cleaner arrived with one cloth to clean all surface areas including the toilet which they proceeded to do . I was worried I would pick up a further infection, standards of cleanliness should be paramount within the Trust but clearly they are not . I was so glad to be going home after 4 days so I could relax in my own clean home.

We're very sorry that your experience of the Lister was not good.

Having reviewed your comments, we're concerned about what has happened and feel it needs to be followed up with you urgently.

If you are willing to do so, please can you email us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net so that we can get our senior nursing colleagues for surgery and gynaecology to discuss your concerns with you.

We hope that you do get in touch.
