"My sons abscess surgery"

About: Worcestershire Royal Hospital / General surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was admitted to Worcester Hospital for incision and drainage of an abscess. We stayed on riverbank ward overnight and the staff were very kind and the ward clean and comfortable with great facilities for children.

Due to community nurses not being able to come out to our address until the following week (I am not entirely sure why but the bank holiday weekend didn't help) we had to return to the hospital 6 times to have the wound re-dressed and the abscess packed, however Worcester hospital did not have the right medicines to do this and it became very clear the ward staff are not really familiar with abscess wound management.

In the end I have had to take in my own supplies for them to perform the wound management over the weekend. They were obviously trying their best to help but there was a big difference to the techniques and expertise of the community nurses that I have seen at home since. I was quite surprised and disappointed a hospital would not have the supplies or staff with the clinical knowledge to manage these wounds appropriately.
