What I liked
The ward was ran like clockwork thanks to the superb senior nurses and sisters. I was very impressed by the care the elderly patients received on the ward especially by the young student nurses and the ancillary staff.I had to have an emergency operation and my after care required various drips and tubes, the nurse responsible for my care was excellent. When staff changes occured I always knew who would continue my care. I was impressed that all the nursing staff did a ward round without the doctors to discuss each patient's progress and nursing needs at each shift change. The sisters on the ward seemed to have a real handle on every aspect of their ward.
What could be improved
What let it down for me was the attitude of some the junior doctors. One in particlular ,a female, sluthered down the ward in ill fitting shoes and proceeded to try to insert a cannula in a vein in my hand. After five attempts I asked her to stop and asked if there was a colleague who could do it instead, he arrived five minutes later and inserted it first time. She had apparently been on duty nearly two days and was so tired she couldn't see. Thankfully she went off duty from my bedside.
I wasn't very happy with the discharge visit five weeks later. The doctor I saw had not been part of the surgical team or the team I had seen in hospital. I didn't know him from Adam. He was not helpful in answering my questions. As he had not been part of my treatment he answered generally rather than specifically to my case. As I had had such excellent care in the hospital, this was disappointing and a real let down.
