"The A&E Staff were absolutly ..."

About: Airedale General Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

The A&E Staff were absolutly Amazing even though they were very busy.

Anything else?

My 6yr old son was admitted to A&E at 3pm after knocking himself out at school. The staff there were great and saw us quickly they gave him some pain relief and sent us up to the childrens ward for observation. We were told once on the ward he could have something to eat and drink, he's dairy intollerant yet I was told that wasn't a problem as they cater for different diets. Once there he was given a bed and seen by a nurse who was lovely and reasuring with my son. The doctor told me he would need watching for several hours, not too bad I thought. At 6.30 he'd still had no refreshments so I went to ask if he could have something to eat i was told they didn't have anything for him but he could have dried toast as the butter wasn't suitable. I asked if I could take him to the canteen for a suitable meal but the nurse wasn't very happy about it, thankfully the doctor agreed. By now we'd been in the hospital 4 hours. At 10.30pm I went and asked how much longer we had to stay and they seemed surprised nobody had told me he was to stay overnight. I asked what they were going to do about his breakfast and I was told it would have to be dried toast. I went home and collected some things including spread and milk (my son was not going without!!). As it was so late I had no choice but to leave him there and return to my other children. If I had been told earlier I could have arranged to stay with him, it was the most heartbreaking thing I have ever had to do. I was fortunate in that another mum said she'd watch over him and make sure he was okay. Overall the service we received was truly awful they couldn't cater for his diet, they didn't even provide him with a drink of water, we weren't kept informed. It was as though he didn't exist. The hospital ought to be ashamed, I know I am.
