I was unlucky enough to catch bacterial pneumonia at the end of June. My GP failed to diagnose it but when I contacted NHS 24 and was admitted to Hairmyres Hospital, the care I received was excellent. The doctors in A and E were efficient and refreshingly unpatronising, as was the consultant who dealt with me later. The nursing staff on wards 4 and 5 were almost without exception wonderful. They were patient and caring as well as efficient and most of the orderlies were similarly great. I have never been an in-patient in hospital before (apart from a brief period having my son) and I have to say that I left Hairmyres with a very positive view of the care I had received. The hospital was clean and even the food was far better than I had expected. The NHS would be nowhere without the hard working staff on the front line and the 1% pay rise that the nurses etc have been given is little short of derisory in my opinion. Give the money MP's are to get as their chunky pay increase to the NHS front line staff I think they at least deserve it!
