"Neurosurgery is in an appaling state!"

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

After years of debate there is now an almighty rush to get neurosurgery to Brighton. I needed an operation and, after several cancellations, was admitted in Juky. Mine was the first operation of the day. I was shown into a furniture store at 07.30where I was seen my various doctors but there was so much confusion that I did not go down for my operation until 10.30. The doctor who clerked me wrote all my meds down wrongly even though I had listed them out for them. When my wife rang up to see how the operation went she was first told that I was in recovery and that they did not have a bed on the ward. The next time she was met by 'please speak slowly, me no understand English good'.

I had one nurse who was supposed to be qualified but had to keep going back to the sister to find out how to do various things, including changing a dressing. Being foreign their language skills were not good and I had to explain that the trade name on tablet packs was differant from the medical name. I had to show them where the co-coda ol box was.

The nurse had no time for the patients. My stay was appaling and I would not recommend BSUH.

Response from Royal Sussex County Hospital

Dear Cator1956,

Thank you for your comments about your poor experience of Neurosurgery at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

I am very disappointed to see these and sorry to read that you had such a bad time.

This is certainly not how we want to treat any of our patients.

I would like to assure you that the relocation of these services to Brighton was not rushed.

It was planned over a long time but despite planning the move very carefully, a number of difficulties arose which have been addressed.

I will share your comments with the team and do hope that things are now improving for you.

Once again, thank you for letting us know about your experiences.

Kind regards,

Andrew Harvey
