"I had cataract surgery. Excellent ..."

About: St James's University Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I had cataract surgery. Excellent service from eye clinic, clerical staff, ward 27, theatres and medical and nursing staff.

Largely efficient service, staff very friendly

What could be improved

On ward whilst waiting for operation all patients kept in day room. Would recommend that a small area is created where patients can be seen individually whilst nurses admitting them rather than in an open area.

Whilst sat in day room I could overhear all sorts of conversations at nursing station relating to patients on list and inpatients.

I would suggest that the patient info pre op includes an explanation of why everyone has to come early before the list starts (to see the nurses and surgeon before the list starts) as this was the cause of some discussion amongst those not early on the theatre list.

Another small issue regarding communication is the manner of asking questions. Some patients were unnerved by being asked what operation they were there for- this question should be prefixed by a statement that the staff want to check that you understand what you have come in for

Anything else?

I am enormously impressed by the outcomes from my surgery. I have no hesitation reassuring others regarding cataract surgery at sjuh. I cannot imagine how my local anaesthesia and surgery could have been better.

many, many thanks to all involved.
