"Surgery in NHS Western Isles and Glasgow Royal Infirmary"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary Western Isles Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I underwent surgery in NHS Western Isles for a biopsy on a suspect lump in my abdomen. The care I received from the staff in Surgical was exceptional they did everything in their power to put me at ease whilst waiting to go into surgery. They ensured that I was discharged as soon as it was clinically safe to do so as they knew I was keen to be cared for at home.

The biopsy result showed that I had a rare sarcoma and my care was transferred to a multi Disciplinary Team at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. I underwent surgery and was taken care of in the burns unit. The staff stood out in the way that they not only cared for me but also in the open and friendly manner they showed to my family and kept them fully informed throughout my stay.

The ward itself was always cheerful, one of the highlights was being provided with jugs of iced water four times a day which kept my hydrated and helped my recovery as I had to make myself walk backwards and forwards to the toilet.

The team was truly multi disciplinary with Physiotherapists situated on the ward who were able to help with my breathing post operation and the pain team who visited throughout my stay to adjust my medication on a regular basis and ensure that I was comfortable.

Since my stays in hospital my follow up care both within the Western Isles and Glasgow has been exceptionally good with my care being shared so that I dont have to travel so frequently to the mainland for follow up appointments.
