as someone who suffers from mental health issues, I have been in the gilbert bain hospital before with suicide attempts ... after speaking to the psychiatrist we made a plan that if I felt suicidal, instead of acting on it I would get myself to A&E ... the only time I did this I was greeted with the words 'you havent tried to kill yourself tonight though so why are you here? ' this left me feeling even worse, like I was just wasting everyones time, I didnt want to kill myself but I didnt want to live anymore either, all I wanted was to feel safe, but that didnt happen.
I dont know about nurses training, but I think they should be trained in basic mental health (again I dont know if they are or not) but the nurses I met in A&E had no clue how to deal with mental health. I felt like I was treated like a child by everyone, I remember one nurse calling me stupid and selfish and that I should grow up and start being an adult.
I cant say this about all the staff in the hospital though, when I was admitted to ward 3 for treatment for a suicide attempt everyone was lovely, they didnt judge, they kept me distracted from my thoughts and spoke to me like I was a normal person and I genuinely felt like they cared. I know there were not mental health nurses, but they could of been, they were brilliant and they knew how to deal with mentally ill people. I would give them an award if I could.
