"All the nurses on the Day Case ..."

About: King's Mill Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

All the nurses on the Day Case Ward were fantastic and very reassuring. The Anaesthetists, were both lovely as I was very very scared about the Anaesthetic. They spent a lot of time talking to me and explaining exactly what they were going to do, reassuring me that I would be okay. Tom made sure he went through the procedure with me, and made sure I understood and got to the bottom of what I was scared of. When I went down to the Main Theatre, there was another gentleman in the room also who took my bloody pressure and monitored my stats. He was also very, very nice, he held my hand and tried to make me laugh to put me at ease. When I came round from my operation, the nurses were very helpful, they kept talking to me and asking me to rate my pain on a scale on 1-10 so they knew what pain relief to give me.

What could be improved

When I was taken up to a ward as was unfit to go home, I didn't think the nurses were as helpful as they could have been and thought more time could have been spent with me. The seemed a little annoyed with me that I was in pain and could have been a little more sympathetic. I desperately wanted to get up to go to the loo but was offered no help and was not told the best way of getting out of bed after my laparoscopy. Instead, they just offered me a bed pan. The next morning, someone came round and told me I was being discharged even though I had not managed to get out of bed yet after my anaesthetic or use the toilet! Again, no one offered any help or advise to me on how to get out of bed. They just drew the curtain around me and left me to my own devices. I felt very very dizzy and weak but didn't want to ask for any help as felt I was putting them out.
