male relative admitted to A&E on Monday evening at 11.00 with yet again a dislocated hip (7th time this has happened) our dad is 84 years old and has vascular dementia, he spent the whole night on a trolley whilst the staff tried in vain to contact the orthopaedic on call doctor who never turned up till 5.45 am, breezed in and said right talk me through what happened. please keep in mind our dad at 84 was in pain had taken his meds and was on a trolley so his confusion was awful, my sister asked to see the doctor outside and said you can see the state he is in and yet you expect him to answer your questions. he will not be giving you the factual answers you need. eventually dad got a bed at 7 after my mother who is 82, my sister and my dad spending all night in A&E.
So obviously now we thought great he will go to theatre again(second time within 7 days) but no he was left 24 hours with a dislocated hip, confusion and he was trying to get out of the bed not understanding why he had to stay in and be away from his family, we complained trying to get him down to theatre but to no avail , due to emergencies but our dad was an emergency and his confusion was no better! so he had his op on Tuesday and of course came back from theatre and started trying to get out of bed, when we arrived a member of staff said he keeps trying to get out bed can you tell him he has to stay in bed!!
So lots of questions to be answered and we are making a official complaint not least to find out why after a hip replacement which dislocated and a revision of the hip which carried on dislocating, also we kept being told we know what we are doing with people who have dementia. I have to ask the question really. if you do why did a consultant go onto the ward and have a conversation with our dad explained the future plan for dad's hip and then left? dad has no recollection of this conversation or even seeing any doctor? If you know what you are doing with people with dementia why leave a man of 84 on a trolley all night in A&E? why did the orthopaedic doctor say they had only bleeped once when in fact they had been bleeped 3 times. A&E staff were so embarrassed by what was happening to dad but could do nothing without this bolshie doctor and their poor bedside manner and lack of understanding of dementia.
This hospital is just another Stafford and needs to pull its self up by its boot straps.
no where we have seen is there a dementia protocol disgraceful. getting our dad out ASAP. To keep him safe .
