"Arrogant consultant"

About: The Royal Victoria Infirmary

I was diagnosed with HIV after my partner was admitted to this ward- ok,

It happens,

I was mostly 'okay' though bewildered at a few problems with their appointments but it was tolerable.

I met the unit head consultant on one appointment and they discussed with me about telling everyone and I told the consultant that Ive 'known' 5 people in 18 years and that I had already told the two or three I have 'Known' since my last HIV test, I told the consultant that I had done so immediately.

I saw the same consultant a few times every couple of months and they kept repeating this discussion- recommending I go to the GUM clinic to do partner tracing- each time I told the consultant its been done, by me and several months ago.

I made it quite clear that this seemed to be forced upon me and reiterated very clearly that I have addressed all that a responsible person should do.

I thought this was a language problem or simple aloofness. I was told it is their pathway and that I can follow it or they will transfer me to Sunderland.

What really angered me beyond words was when i was approached by a family member working in another 'healthcare unit' in Newcastle stating that the same consultant had written to them telling them to run partner tracing and call me (which they did at work and sent a letter to my old home address) I complained (note to reader: don't waste your time complaining)

Very long story short-

I decided to withdraw from treatment and seek my own options- I wrote confirming my intent and saying that I needed to know the details of the condition (there are a number of variants or something)

My letter was acknowledged but I never- ever got a reply.

I sent polite reminders but I was not told a single detail about this condition.

So since 2013 I have had no treatment at all! -

Save your time, patience, dignity and your life- find somewhere else.

We are sorry to read that you had such a poor experience as a patient in our Infectious Diseases Service in 2013 that this led to you disengaging with our services.

From what you say it appears you’re your complaint was investigated at the time and if that was the case or it was not resolved to your satisfaction you can contact the trust again with your outstanding issues or concerns. To do this, please contact our Patient Relations Department on 0191 223 1382.

If you are not receiving care and support at present and wish to re-engage with our services we will of course, ensure you get the advice and information needed.

Once again, we are sorry that the care you received in 2013 did not meet your needs and we hope to be able to fully address the concerns that you have.
