"Cannot thank enough all the people who cared for my father"

Following cancer diagnosis for my father Macmillan nurses were on hand to provide care and support for him. Care for my father was also coordinated with other care providers – Marie Curie and Hospice at Home towards the end of his life, all the providers shared notes about my father to ensure they were all able to provide the continuous palliative care he needed seamlessly. My father received outstanding care from them.

In his final week when I visited him at home I was amazed to see nurses from Tapping House Hospice at Home washing his hair and keeping him as up-beat as possible. The attention and kind-heartedness shown was outstanding.

My father was given medical treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, I cannot thank Dr Lewis and his team enough for the care and kindness shown whilst my father was on Dr Lewis’ ward. The care and compassion was amazing, on one occasion when my father was particularly poorly and a bed was not immediately available Dr Lewis took my father into his office and sat with him until a bed became available.

Sadly, care on some of the other wards was not as good, there were times when my father was left dirty and clothes went missing, these were particularly shocking instances.

The care and support from Norfolk Hospice has continued since my father passed away. My mother is receiving aftercare for the bereaved helping her to socialize and come to terms with the bereavement.

This is an amazing set up in Norfolk, I have spoken to friends in Kent, where I live, who have never heard of this model of care for terminally ill patients.

I really cannot thank enough all the people who cared for my father.

Thank you for posting your comments recently about your father's care at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the Macmillan Centre, Marie Curie, Hospice at Home and Tapping House Hospice.

I am very pleased to hear that your father's care was provided seamlessly between different teams and that his emotional needs ('keeping him as up-beat as possible') were supported also. I am reassured to hear that on the whole your father received care, compassion, attention and kind-heartedness but equally disappointed to hear that this was not always the case on different wards, we are endeavouring to improve the standard of care throughout the hospital so in future the standard received is always high and individual to a patient's needs.

I know that this must be a very difficult time for you at present and I will be sharing your comments with my colleagues involved in cancer and palliative care throughout the hospital and beyond (in the other support services you mentioned) so that they are aware of how appreciated patient's and their families are of the care they provide. I am pleased that your mother is continuing to receive support and hope that if other families need the care you required it is available to them in a similar way.
