"July 9th Admission."

About: Wythenshawe Hospital

I attended the Cardiac Unit at Wythenshawe Hospital on the 9th of July and had defibrillator [ICD] device fitted. I was apprehensive, i'm 76 years old, but did not need to be. I have nothing but admiration for the skill and dedication of the clinical team that carried out the procedure. The consultant and their multinational team were excellent. The consultant explaining the procedure in detail and what occurred. The procedure was as they described and my recovery was swift and painless. This was helped by the nursing staff in the unit who, from the time I arrived until my departure the following day, were professional. In addition the nursing staff were friendly and worked with humour and friendly banter but always operating with courtesy. They helped my recovery. The system that had been fitted and the accompanying equipment was explained to me in detail. The technician that did this was also friendly and professional. On the 5th of August I visited the Northwest Heart Center for my first follow up visit. Again I received excellent treatment from the nurse who carried out the checks on the defibrillator. Again this was done in a friendly way and again with a degree of humour, which I appreciate. I finally met with the consultant whose professional attitude mirrored that of the rest of the unit. I have nothing but admiration for all that assisted with the procedure. The NHS is often maligned, in my opinion unfairly so. The treatment and attitude of the individuals in the unit is a credit to the NHS. We are fortunate to have health service that cares for us in the way it does. Please accept my thanks to all involved. David Thomas
