"Ward 31 please get your act together"

About: Leicester General Hospital

Admitted to ward 11, staff couldnt be more helpful and cheery...no complaints at all ! After operation moved to ward 31..... I was a day case patient so asked the nurse to call my husband, he would then check what time to collect me.... Instead they passed the job onto an NA who left a voicemail on his phone saying that I would be staying overnight ! I asked if the canula could be removed from my hand, the infusion hadnt run since theatre as no one had checked the line for air bubbles or flushed it. I had tried to knock the bubbles out myself but after a GA was too clumsy. The NA returned and told me that it couldnt be removed as I hadnt eaten or PU. No one on ward 31 had asked what I would like to eat or told me where the toilet was. I asked for the nurse to come, explained that I am right handed and would be unable to use the toilet with my rt hand connected to the IVI. They agreed to remove it and after I asked where the toilet was they directed me. Curtains were not drawn around bed so I could get out with some dignity, and no one had told me I was bleeding from the op... So I had to hobble holding my gown at the back and a pad between my legs during visiting times to the toilet. If you have protocols in place that suggest patients should eat and PU before discharge then please please please offer food and tell us where the toilet is !!!
