"The Stroke Unit"

About: Croydon University Hospital

My father was in this unit for 2 weeks up until his death on 13 June. The care he received here was wonderful, at no time did we feel "in the way" and we were actively encourage to come and go as we please whenever we wanted to. The consultants went out of their way to speak to us whenever we requested and at no time were decisions made without discussing them with us first. The nursing staff and health care staff were amazing, they work very long shifts and are on their feet all the time. There were a few who lacked communication skills, such as at meal times, when patients may need to be fed or when patients intimate care was required. All they have to do is speak to them, just because they cant always answer or may be confused, a few words cost nothing. Several staff members stood out, they always made a point of talking to us and as we were there rather a lot they always checked we were taking care of ourselves. The person who stood out most was the HCA, fantastic communication skills, and so much compassion - they would make a fantastic nurse. The Chaplaincy Team were great as was the palliative care Nurse. When we knew dad was being transferred from PRUH we were dreading it, but we have had our faith restored and The Stroke Unit here was even better than at the PRUH. Thank you

Dear Anonymous

Thank you so much for taking the time to let us know of your experience, as I appreciate that this must be a difficult time for you and your family. Please accept my condolences on your loss.

I will pass on your kind words to the different teams involved in your late father's care, as these are always appreciated. I will also make sure the ward managers are aware of your comments about the few staff who lacked communication skills to try and make sure that we address those problems with appropriate training.

Kind regards

Graham Richardson
