"Elderly care"

About: Good Hope Hospital / Elderly medicine

(as a relative),

My father was admitted to Good Hope hospital. He has dementia yet can have good communication days and bad ones. We informed the staff of this. When we visit, daily, it has been so hard to get updates, it seems that because doctor has spoken to dad they don't see the need to communicate to family members what treatment plan is taking place as dad always forgets what has been said to him and nurses are always too busy to tell us when we ask. Would be a good idea to have notepad at bedside for family members to leave questions (with the patients permission) so they can be answered and so avoid time that should be spent visiting patient being wasted trying find someone who can give accurate information on progress/treatment of patient.

Response from Marie Helebert, Patient Services Officer, Patient Services, Heart of England Foundation Trust

Dear Pollyboo

Thank you for your feedback regarding your father's stay in Good Hope Hospital.

I am sorry that you found it difficult to obtain updates as to treatment and care your father was receiving.

It is understandable that family members do not like to bother staff when they are busy to ask questions; whilst staff are busy, good communication with close family members is also important. it is also understandable that when a patient suffers from a condition that may affect their understanding or memory, they may or may not retain medical information that is discussed with them. May I suggest that you ask to speak to the nurse in charge should you encounter difficulties in the future and they will be happy to either contact a doctor for you to speak with, if one is not already on the ward; or provide you with contact details for the patient's consultant to make further arrangements at a mutally convenient time.

I do hope this information is helpful and please contact patient services on 0121 424 0808 should you continue to experience any difficulty.

Kind regards

Marie Helebert
