"NHS at its best"

About: Wansbeck Hospital

i travelled from The Midlands to the Northeast at the beginning of May to be my daughters birthing partner...little did I know that within 24 hours of arriving in Cramlington I would be fighting for my life with Pneumonia and sepsis. I was in intensive care for 4 days and spent a total of 11 days in hospital. The doctors in A and E were amazing and so were the nurses. Critical care was scary but all the staff were so competent and calm and never left my side.... then finally to the ward where I realised I couldn't understand the accent and they couldn't understand me!!... But we got on really well!!! By the time I left hospital I had learnt the Ashington accent,...lost a stone,....and gained a wonderful new grandson!!!.....thank you so much wansbeck for saving my life...I can't thank you enough..... on the good work xxx

Dear Jayne, Goodness me, how terrifying for you! What a turn of events to bring you in to hospital as an emergency care patient yourself. As a Trust we have done a huge amount of work over the last year or so to transform care and our response to sepsis. More than 37,000 people in the UK die of sepsis every year - our teams are working tirelessly to spot it quickly and provide an urgent response with a special bundle of treatment options that we know save lives. We're also paying specific attention to pneumonia and the best way to treat it quickly. I feel really proud of this work and the huge improvements our teams have made in just 12 months. Our focus is on being among the very best in the world when it comes to sepsis care. The reward for our staff is the human outcome of best care: in your case, a proud Granny who gets to go home and spend time with her beautiful Grandson. I trust that you, Mum and baby are all thriving now. Many congratulations on the new addition to your family. What a welcome gift after all the worrying. If you have time, would you mind getting in touch with me privately via email annie.laverty@nhct.nhs.uk. I'd love to hear more about your care and story. With all best wishes, Annie
