About: Southmead Hospital

What is supposed to be a happy joyful time with the birth of our first choice, has turned into a stressful miserable experience... None of my parents were allowed to be with us for support because of the riddiculous rules in this place! Not even a waiting room for them so at least i could go and talk... Visiting is a complete joke.. Strictly 2 at a time is realy hard to accomadate everyone who wants to see out new addition, and also leaves us stuck in a tiny room which we have been moved to sharing with another mother and baby.. Impossible to have our 2 visitors and hers, and unable to talk privately... The care is OK... Out newborn we were told would have tests done within 4 hrs of being born because of heridatary conditions.. Wasnt done until over 10 hrs later.. My parents asked to speak with a midwife to clarify things and they were met with attitude! Would not reccomend giving birth here! So stressful, feeling very isolated and cramped.. Not what we were hoping our first few days of parenthood would be like... Cannot express enough how bad it is..

Dear Anonymous – I am sorry that your birth experience was not as you would have wished. Clearly security is paramount, and the precautions used were introduced following several cases where babies were taken from maternity units across the country. Visitor numbers are also controlled in deference to other new mothers and their families, but I regret that this along with the space available in the ward marred your stay. The unit is also very busy and I am sorry if the reasons for any delay in performing tests was not explained and the necessary reassurance given to you at this anxious time. I also regret if any staff were perceived has having “attitude” as clearly this is not something any of the maternity services team would wish to convey.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post your views. I sincerely hope that you are now enjoying this special time in any family.

Steve Sykes
