"My surgery and stay at Stanway Ward"

About: Colchester General Hospital

I had a gynecological surgical procedure done at CGH. I arrived a bit early and was shown to a waiting area. When the other patients had arrived, a friendly nurse showed us to the ward and our beds. We were given our gowns and surgical stockings to put on, then rested on our beds. A nursing assistant came to take my observations. Next, I was seen by my consultant, who went over the planned procedure and possible risks, and gave me a consent form to sign. My consultant was as professional as you would expect, but also warm and friendly enough to answer any concerns I might have. A bit later my anesthetist came to see me to introduce herself and explain what would be done. A bit later, a nurse and a porter came to wheel me into the pre-op room just outside of theatre. I saw my surgical team as my obs were taken. An ECG monitor was put on me and the nurse put my canula in. Everyone was friendly and warm, so I did not feel too nervous. The anesthetist gave me a sedative, someone asked me a question and......I woke up in recovery! A nurse was with me as I woke and told me what time I'd left surgery, and was by my side until I recovered enough to return to the ward. Ward sisters and nursing assistants were very friendly. They made sure I got my pain medication and should I need more, all I needed to do was call. They made sure I had my call button to hand, and when I did ring for help, came within 5 minutes. (I needed help to use a commode). In the night, additional pain relief was available for me when I asked, as I was feeling very rough from anesthesia and my procedure. The only thing that I could possibly criticize was the drip that came in with me from theatre or recovery. It wasn't working, despite me mentioning this a couple of times. I believe it was just saline, and there wasn't much left, but it didn't get going until one of the night staff adjusted it. My consultant came around to discuss the outcome of my surgery in the morning, and as all had gone to plan, I would be discharged a bit later on. All in all, the staff were a lovely and helpful. A great team! Thank-you for everything!
