"my wife broke her hip"

About: Dorset County Hospital

My wife had a fall on the way home to Portsmouth she was taken to Dorchester hospital and had a hip replacement operation the care and treatment was excellent 98% of staff we very good.. I have only one complaint the visiting hours, one hour in the afternoon and one hour in the evening I had to travel from Portsmouth each day for over two weeks a round trip of 160 miles each day . I visited in the afternoon then had to disappear for three and a half hours before the evening visit then travel home some staff were good and gave me concessions to stay longer outside of visiting hours but these were few and far between I clocked up nearly 2000 miles and around £70 in hospital parking. I am 75 years old and my wife is 72 there needs to be some sort of definite ruling on people who have to travel long distances to visit , I was arring home at night and going straight to bed, perhaps 2 to 21/2 hours in the afternoon would be good this would allow people to travel and arrive home at a reasonable time. I say thanks again for the very good treatment my wife received.

Response from Dorset County Hospital

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with us, I will make sure the Orthopaedic team hear how much you appreciated the care and treatment your wife received at our Hospital. I am however very sorry to read that you found the visiting times too restrictive. We changed our visiting times a number of years ago as the feedback from patients were that they were getting far too tired with the open visiting we had in place at that time. Clearly the current arrangement doesn’t work for everyone and so the wards have discretion to extend this in line with individual needs. I am really sorry we were not flexible enough to meet you and your wife’s needs. I totally agree that travelling that distance is a challenge on a daily basis for anyone. I will ensure your feedback is passed onto the ward and ask them to exercise more discretion in future. I am pleased that your wife’s care and treatment was good and I hope she is making a good recovery. I am grateful to you for taking the time to share your feedback; it is very much appreciated by by all our staff. Best wishes, Alison Tong, Director of Nursing, Dorset County Hospital
