"Ophthalmology department"

About: Seacroft Hospital

I was transferred from St James's Hospital to Seacroft in late 2014. Some of the positives of being a patient at Seacroft include: I'm usually seen at my appointment time without any long delays; I automatically see the same Consultant each time which allows for consistency and smoother interfacing; my Consultant patiently involves me in treatment and care decisions including surgery options; the Consultant who performed the surgery procedure on me this year was very efficient and gave me confidence in his abilities. The technical staff are caring and treat me like an individual. When I've had reason to phone the Unit, the staff have been very accommodating. They are courteous and friendly, even to the point of remembering my name and the reason why I'm ringing them. They definitely score major points for efficiency and awareness. The only minor quibble I have is the Reception waiting area which could be made better by leaving the loud pop/rock music from the radio turned off. The volume of the music is stressful and doesn't suit the Waiting Area, which is filled primarily elderly patients. This is the only part of the appointment experience I dread. Some of the Reception staff appear indifferent when I arrive for an appointment. One of the Receptionists is always welcoming and helpful, particularly when booking the follow-on appointment. However, some of the other Reception staff won't even make eye contact and can hardly be bothered to tell one to "take a seat" when a patient arrives for their appointment. And they could do with making an effort with the elderly patients in wheelchairs, as I have seen one or two struggling to the toilets without any offer of help or assistance from the Reception staff. I suppose the flip side of this is I've witnessed Reception having to deal with some very obnoxious and demanding would-be patients. And so I realise that it is not an easy job, but they could make their lot a bit easier if they were more personable and attentive. Overall my experiences have been very positive, and if the Reception was improved, I'd be rating the Clinic with 5 stars across the board.

Response from Leeds Teaching Hospitals

Dear Anonymous

Firstly, thank you for your positive feedback regarding the eye department at Seacroft; it is a pleasure to read that you have had good experiences with your treatment and the clinical staff you have encountered there. I am, however, sorry to hear that the reception area does not meet the same standards. I can certainly pass your feedback on to management in the department for them to look in to what you have raised to see where improvements can be made. They can also pass your positive words on to staff who will no doubt be pleased to hear that you feel they are providing a good service.

With kindest regards
