"The Critical Care Unit"

About: Royal Gwent Hospital / General Surgery

(as a relative),

My wifewas rushed to the Royal Gwent Hospital on an evening in June with severe stomach pain. She was assessed in the Medical Assessment Unit which was extremely busy and transferred to the Surgical Assessment Unit due to her continuing pain and inability to go to the toilet though desperate to do so. She was kept overnight with view to being examined by a consultant however her bowel burst and she required immediate surgery the following morning for peritonitis, a procedure that took around five hours and one which only a small percentage survive..

The operation was major surgery and she required a catheter and stoma bags and she was kept in the Critical Care Unit where her life was in the balance.
