"Everything! Clean and Modern, ..."

About: Addenbrooke's Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

Everything! Clean and Modern, felt well-cared for and looked after. Walked though entrance to A&E to automatic voice telling me to wash my hands. Waiting room had 11 hand wash stations, was clean and we saw 2 different people cleaning and disinfecting in the 2 hours we were there. The toilets were fantastic - very clean and operated by motion sensors so no touching dirty handles and taps.

What could be improved

Moving it to Peterborough so I don't have to drive so far....

Anything else?

Greeted inside by a triage nurse in a respirator who asked questions about recent travel, flu, diahorrea and vomiting symptons and of course the reason for our visit. Anyone with infectious symptons was taken to a sepearate waiting area. Then went to reception to book in patient details. Seen by a ENP (emergency Nurse practionor) next very quickly who took a more detailed history and did observations and administered pain killers.

Then in to see a Doctor who was brilliant! She not only stitched up the self-inflicted wound on my daughters arm but did it without the judgement and negative comments we so often get at other hospitals - she also asked what had happened to cause the self-harm and gave plenty of time and care to listen. Daughter had been told she had MRSA and GP had told her she couldn't go back to college for 3 weeks (or more) until swabs were clear - meaning she would be unable to complete the course and would have to resit next year - a big disappointment.

Best of all Dr went and fetched an information leaflet explaing what MRSA was and what you could and couldnt do and showed her the section that said the department of health states that she could still go to school with MRSA colonisation. GP and peterborough hospital didn't give any information or leaflets for daughter or family - just told her she had it and sent her home worried and in tears.

Dr also took time to check if daughter needed any help with her mental health in general. She had a lovely bedside manner and told lots of funny stories to put my daughter at ease.

The other hospital we go to - as soon as they know you have mental health issues and self-harm they treat you very badly and refuse to believe anything you say - It is bad enough that my daughter was raped and abused and is struggling to cope with it but being abused again by health care people is just plain wrong. Big Thumbs up to Addenbrokes!!
