"Speech and Language therapy Dewsbury"

About: Locala Community Partnerships CIC / Children's speech and language therapy

(as a parent/guardian),

I have been concerned about my son's speech since he was 2 (2012) - we didn't get the usual toddler speech.

At 2 1/2 started pressing for services to help us. My health visitor was great. We had his ears tested, a referral was made to the SALT team in Dewsbury, and a CAF was put in place too to address his needs.

In Spring 2013 a speech therapist observed my son both in clinic and at home. She was invited to the caf meeting, and I was basically told in front of all the professionals at the meeting that my son wasn't delayed as much as I made out, and implied that I wasn't paying attention/encouraging his speech. I was mortified and was made to 'beg' her to help us.

She eventually agreed for us to access a group speech therapy.

Since then my son attended the group therapy twice, he had ongoing support in nursery to address his speech issues, intensive support throughout reception and still Thornhill School's specialist speech department and the specialist speech therapist is working with him.

We have recently been told my son has a speech and language impairment.

In the last few years I have gone to Manchester for a 2 day pecs course, I have done a 2 day foundation makaton course which we funded ourselves, I have purchases pecs kits, makaton resources, dvd's all in desperation to get my son talking and for us to communicate.

Currently my son age 5 is working on a 4 word level since using makaton which is excellent because prior to this 6 month ago he was on an inconsistent 1-2 word level.

I'm not happy about this particular professionals demeanor, opinions and prejudice.

She made me feel like I was not a good mother and it's really knocked my confidence.

Hello

Whilst I am very happy to hear about the progress your son has made, I am of course very concerned to hear about the experience you have had.

Our Speech and Language Team Leader would like to talk to you in more detail about your concern so that we can look at what needs to be addressed. Her name is Tracy Biddle and her contact number is 030 3330 9327.

Alternatively if you prefer you can email me at emma.dickens@locala.org.uk and I will put you in touch.

Best wishes

Emma

Hello

I was pleased to hear that following this posting you have now had a conversation with team leader Tracy Biddle about your experiences with the speech and language service.

Following your conversation I have met with both the speech and language therapist that worked with your son two years ago and your health visitor. We have also been through the various healthcare records. There is a difference in recollection of the events of that time, although perhaps that is not wholly unsurprising given the length of time. Certainly your comments came as quite a shock to the therapist involved with your sons care. She was unaware at the time of there being any issues and felt that you had a good relationship, therefore she is saddened to know that this is not your version of events. None of our colleagues would ever want a mother to feel as you describe.

On a positive note however we are all very pleased to hear that things are working well with your current therapist and that your son is making good progress.

If there is anything you would like to add about your experiences do please feel free to contact me either on 07814 301 262 or emma.dickens@locala.org.uk.

We wish you and your family all the best for the future

Emma
