"Sent home without opiates and told to take..."

My mum is having chemo for cancer and she was feeling unwell a couple of weekends back so I took her to Blackburn A&E to be checked out. They kept her in and the assessment ward did a brilliantly thorough job in getting to the root of the problem. However, she was then transferred to a ward (C3 I think) who took all her tablets off her, refused to allow her to take them in line with the treatment schedule so carefully drawn up for her by the hospice and then sent her home without her opiate pain patch. When they realised this had happened someone told her to get more from her doctor and in the meantime to take paracetamol. By the time I got to her house 24 hours later she was in full cold turkey with appalling anxiety, breathlessness, freezing cold, talking gibberish and also in great pain. As a result she wasn't well enough to have her chemo and her treatment had to be put back a week. I do appreciate that staff are appallingly overworked and accidents happen and the last thing I want to do is cause more stress to them. However, I would question the training level of someone who tells a patient with advanced cancer that she can do fine without an opiate pain reliever and just take a couple of paracetamol without any adverse effects.
