"What a truly awful hospital. I ..."

About: St John's Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

What a truly awful hospital. I was admitted into the labour ward for monitoring a few hours after my waters broke and put in a room where there were coke cans stuffed behind the rads and generally looked firty and scruffy. Was then sent home and told to come back to day assessment next day and then admitted after they were heavy handed doing an internal and thought there was meconium in waters. Spent all day in labour ward with no food available. In the end my partner had to go to Tesco and get me something. At switch over had the worst midwife in the world who wasn't particularly attentive or encouraging and who thought it was funny to add (when I had been pushing for an hour) and had been in labour for 36hours that I could start pushing properly now I wasn't going to have an April Fool's baby. Baby was born but was sent straight to neonatal in case she had swallowed meconuim and didn't come back for ages. When she came back they put me on the ward at 3.30am told partner that he had to go and left me. They also couldn't confirm if she'd had a bottle at this stage as I wanted to breastfeed. After that I met a new midwife at each shift change and then never saw them again. If you pressed a buzzer they would take forever to get to you. Didn't seem overly concerned that my baby hadn't really fed for 24 hours. Food is truly terrible and although they are meant to keep an eye on the babies when you go to eat in reality they don't and girl in bed next to me ended up cuddling my baby. I had to take baby to neonatal twice a day for antibiotics and asked them to wake me at 5.30am which didn't happen on any day that I was there, just lucky I could use my phone alarm. On discharge day my baby was discharged at 2pm and I then had to wait til 8.30pm for them to discharge me even though I was only there because the baby was there. This truly is a dreadful hospital and I would definitely not go back.

What could be improved

Everything - sooner this goes to Broomfield and they get rid of the USELESS midwives in the hospital the better.
