"The paediatricians and nurses ..."

About: St John's Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

The paediatricians and nurses in the neonatal unit took our daughter from delivery and helped to save her life.

She had to go to a higher level hospital for a while, but on returning to St John's was cared for extremely well.

Cleaning in the neonatal unit exceptional. One day we saw a cleaner on her hands and knees with a scrubbing brush on the floor, and the next day she was using a Q-tip to clean the threads of the sink waste fitting.

Also, the polite, friendly and sympathetic attitude of the porters, cleaners, ancillary staff, receptionists and parking attendant should be noted.

What could be improved

More information should be given to the patients without having to ask. The information was happily given, but generally only when we asked.

Our experience (which seems to match those of others) was that the care shown on the 2nd floor (delivery/post-natal) was noticeably less good. Response to patient needs not great.

Anything else?

The quality of care in the maternity building seems to reduce as you go up the floors!

Car parking charges are outrageous (£3.50 for an hour and a quarter) but I gather this is a Trust issue rather than determined by the Hospital.
