"Quite happy to be a "frequent flyer" here"

About: Ipswich Hospital

Having a melange of chronic issues, I have been what the staff refer to as a "frequent flyer" in Ipswich Hospital for over 15 years now, and more than happy with service I get there. Plus the speed of service/wait time has reduced amazingly recently. X-Ray I was in, done and out (of drop in clinic) last week in less than 40 minutes. And when my Mum was admitted to A&E a couple of months back she was whipped through in next-to-no-time, plus the queue was short. I've had 20++ operations and multiple procedures here, and care and work are always top notch, though I've seen (and been operated on) by almost every GI surgeon on their books over the years and it would have been nice to have some kind of continuity of care, however they have all been excellent, and hey, beople move and retire etc. that's life. Nonetheless the nurse specialists do provide some continuity, and a bit of sane and compassionate advice too (on more than one occasion the surgeon has said "home today" and as soon as they've left my bedside the nurse specialist has rolled their eyes and said to me "I don't think so! Don't worry.") Could they do some things better? Of course. Discharge: it still bewilders me how long it can be between the consultant saying "you can go home now", and when they actually get you out the door - 6 hours once, waiting for the doctor's letter, and all that time blocking up a bed that someone could be using. Some of the outpatient clinics meanwhile seem hugely "over-manned" and yet disorganised with people wandering aimlessly about, picking up your file from one pile and moving it to another, or just looking at it and putting it down again. Indeed in one clinic I was convinced there was a "stats scam" going an as those who were arriving last were being seen immediately, whilst early arriver's files languished at the bottom of a pile until they complained. I puzzled that surely no-one could be so stupid as to accidentally design a system that worked on a LIFO methodology, but then I realised that if the clinic was (as this one was) totally over -booked, then under a FIFO system very soon in the day they would get to the point where everyone was missing their "Target" time,; however with LIFO you maximise the number people hitting the target time- great for that stats (and those that arrive late) rubbish for timely patients

Thank you very much for this valuable feedback which has been shared with the team of colleagues working to significantly improve how all our outpatients clinics and services run. Every good wish for the future.
