the waiting time to be seen by a doctor in er and faster 'emergency ' surgery. more frequent monitoring of vital signes. only done in trigage and once when he first got inside. pillows for the strecher -just elevating the head of the strecher makes the patient just slide right down and no one pulls them up .so if they cant do it or dont have a relative to help them,they stay down with their feet hanging way off the end. more or thicker blankets the elderly patients were freezing.

i took my father to ER with pain and nausia at about 23.30 on thursday night with what I - a nurse for almost 40 years- thought was a strangulated hernia.the staff were worried enough about him to take him straight through from the waiting room.after 3 hrs he hadnt seen a doctor and was in great pain ,i got very angry and he was given pain meds- not sure why if they could give him med they hadnt before!!. finally after 4 pm he was seen and diagnosed with the hernia. the first surgeon said emergency surgery was needed. at about 8 am a second one came and said he needed emergency surgery.and - as i later heard he was to be sent from er to OR and then to the ward. but that didnt happen and he went upstairs. he was seen by several doctors over the day and was always told there was a delay but he would soon go. the operation took place at 2200 friday!!!!!. if surgery had been done as an emergency in the morning it might possiably have been very simple - push it back and stich it up. but having been strangulated for 24 hrs he had to have a resection of part of his bowel and there was purelent drainage when they opened him up. at 87 he hasnt got much healing power and who knows when or if he'll get better

of course the reason was that more critical people kept needing to go ahead of him. which is logicalbut hey this is my dad we are talking about.

We’re sorry that your experience of the Lister's care was not as good as you would have expected, but also pleased that you let us know about what has happened.

It's not clear from your message as to whether or not you have raised your concerns formally with the staff in charge of your father's care or through the Trust's complaints service, but as an experienced nurse I do hope that you will allow us to follow the matter up on your father's behalf.

To do that, all you need do is provide the details of your father's care in an e-mail to generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net – please include his full name, address and date of birth.

At the very least, both of you deserve an explanation as to what happened and why.
