My elderly mother who has dementia, collapsed and hit her head, so an ambulance was called and I accompanied her to Rake lane with the very thorough and helpful ambulance staff. The first person to greet us at the hospital, was a staff nurse, and the first thing out of their mouth, wasn't concern for my mother, but "you'll have to go to Wansbeck, we haven't any beds." The nurse succeeded in seriously upsetting the ambulance staff. It wasn't particularly busy, being mid afternoon on a weekday, and needless to say, there was no shortage of beds, as other staff confirmed. When the nurse realised they couldn't get rid of us, the nurse tried to get rid of me while they dealt with my mother, without asking if my mother might need me for support. This did not inspire me with any confidence in the service, so quite naturally, I refused to leave my mother alone with them. Besides, since my mother has dementia and other problems she would have been unable to explain, I was needed by both the staff and my mother. The nurse then had the gall to come to me and say that they sensed some hostility! Yes, their own. The other staff were thorough and pleasant, and this time, my mother emerged from the hospital unscathed. But too many times my family has suffered damage at their hands, because of this sort of arrogant dismissive attitude that this staff nurse demonstrated which seems to permeate this hospital and authority.
