"Dryden Ward, Eleanor Ward and Holcot Wards,"

About: Northampton General Hospital (Acute)

My mother was admitted to hospital on 5th May with heart problems. She was in the critical cardiac unit in Dryden ward for over a week and our observations were that staff were caring and helpful. However, from piecing various things together we have ascertained that she had a massive stroke immediately after lunch. A friend visited her at 2pm and notified a nurse who said she was just sleepy from medication. He went home in distress. I arrived after work at 6pm and immediately knew she'd had a stroke or TIA and told a nurse who also told me she'd just had medication. On speaking to my mum though I knew it was serious and told the staff nurse on duty to come and see my mum which they did. Then the hospital immediately went into action. My mum had had a massive frontal right lobe stroke. I mentioned to the staff the next day just how long she had remained undiagnosed for and on a critical ward too, and asked them to review the situation so that it doesn't happen to anyone else. Apart from this my mum has had very caring nursing. She has been in hospital for some time and now on Holcot ward for rehabilitation. She has only praise for the staff and they are very apologetic when having to move her as she is in so much pain. I and the family feel that communication could have been much better overall, but we are satisfied with her care. Thanks so much to the staff who do a difficult job with humanity and respect.

Thank you for taking the time to share your mothers experience with us. I offer my sincere apologies for the delay in identifying your mothers stroke. I have shared your experience with the team on Dryden Ward and every effort will be made to safeguard against this happening again. We are really pleased to hear that despite this, your mother was pleased with the care from staff. Again, thank you for sharing with us, we value the opportunity to learn from experience.
