"a and e and ccu"

my mother in law visited the department (a and e) wednesday, 3rd june. she had been experiencing chest pain and breathing problems overnight. she was brought in by ambulance and admitted to resus, where she was immediately treated professionally and with consideration, she is elderly as is her husband. the process was explained, procedures explained and consent obtained. medication was provided promtly, as was a regular supply of drinks. overall, staff very caring and competent under pressure to maintain a very busy department. initial tests concluded that there was a cardiac cause, and the plan was explained - admission to ccu. bed wait for ccu took some time, but this was in part to there not being a porter available to take her up. (the department was extremely busy) could there be a permanent porter based in the emergency department?? on arrival to ccu, my mother in law was greated by the staff nurse caring for her, who had a student with them, and introduced them also, the nurse asked whether it would be ok if the student did the admisssion papaer work (which we agreed to). my only complaint would be: my mother in law was in one of the side rooms and when she was sat on the commode the automatic door kept opening and shutting - privacy and dignity?? she arrived onto ccu with 15litres oxygen, after she came off the commode this had been removed, minus any oxygen monitoring, i had to ask for it to be checked before they removed the equipment - safe monitoring? she asked 3 times for a drink and something to eat ( she is an insulin dependent diabetic and had not eaten since early morning) - diabetic care overnight she had to have hourly observations, was this really necessary to deprive someone of sleep when they were not actively doing anything with the results? overall, the ward staff were friendly, caring and the environment comfortable, although my mother in law would have been very isolated if she had no visitors, as she was told she could not have a tv in that room!. thank god for the magazine trolly!
