"Alexandra Day Unit and Dolphin Ward"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow)

My son visited the Alexandra Day Unit to have his tonsils and adenoids out. From the moment we came in, everybody was polite, welcoming and gave fantastic care. From the receptionist to the nurses, everyone treated us with respect. We were well informed about the procedure and my four year old son was involved in every step of the way, making him feel at ease about his experience. When he came round from the op and was brought back to the unit, staff were encouraging and friendly, making sure he quickly started to drink and eat. When he in fact started eating too much, they were firm but kind in making sure he didn't overdo it. He was checked on regularly, cuddled and comforted and we were also made to feel at ease with everything going on. The doctors and other staff involved were also very kind to my son and happy to inform us, explain things and answer questions. When he had to stay in overnight, he was taken to the Dolphin ward where we were both looked after with the same amount of care and respect. After dreading having to stay with him overnight, I soon realised I needn't have worried. The ward was warm, welcoming and even the fold-up bed was very comfortable! Everyone down to the lovely staff who cleaned the ward and provided our food were lovely. He was quickly seen to in the morning (which usually takes a lifetime!) and we were discharged, after a lovely show from the magician of course! My son was so content, he actually cried when it was time to leave! I would like to say a huge thank you to every member of staff who I came into contact with. I have to admit I have been bitterly disappointed with all my NHS hospital experiences, but this has restored my faith in proper care and respect. My son has made a fast and full recovery and we are so grateful to all you hard-working people.
