"Horrific experience"

Shocking The most frightening place I've ever been, I wouldn't but a criminal in there. Online it makes it out to be a 'nice friendly environment'. Seriously though? It is the complete opposite. They threatened to section me because I said I wanted to leave, when I was still blantently ill and they hadn't given me any medical treatment in the 10 days I was there, but then thankfully transferred to another unit. Half of the staff were clearly uneducated about mental health and didn't know how to deal with mentally ill patients especially the 'nurses' . And doctors weren't much use either, how can a 15 year old be put in there and under go minimal treatment, yet threaten to section someone, appalling. It would benefit young people to be in a nicer environment, communal areas are unpleasant and rooms are equivalent to a prison cell. Food is horrendous no wonder people didn't eat. I felt worse in there and left me feeling traumatised in there as lack of staff meant patients weren't under control. Terrible. 100% never send your child here.

We are sorry to hear that you had a negative experience of the Priory Hospital Cheadle Royal in 2013; as an organisation we are committed to providing the highest quality of care in order to achieve our purpose which is to make a real and lasting difference for everyone we support. We encourage service users to give us feedback, where possible, when they are with us so we can address issues immediately but please rest assured that when we receive retrospective concerns us we still take it seriously and take steps to address the issues raised.

The use of the Mental Health Act is very carefully regulated and it is not our practice to threaten patients with “sectioning” however it is understandable that discussions about the potential need for detention under the Act can be distressing; first and foremost we must put the health and safety of the service user first and from time it is deemed too risky for a person to take their own discharge.

Staff in our young people’s services are in the main part substantive with bank and agency used only when absolutely essential; we make every effort to ensure that staff are trained and inducted and will always act quickly when concerns are raised about one or more individual. Where general comments are made about staff we take this into team meetings with a view to using them as a basis for careful reflection and subsequent practice improvement actions.

Our wards for young people have been subject to a refurbishment programme over the last 2 years which has been driven by input from service users and families and the standard of accommodation is generally considered to be of a high and very comfortable for those using the services. Likewise, we continually strive to improve our menu to meet the expectations of young people and our catering manager regularly meets with young people to achieve the best for them.
