"Horrendous Hospital"

About: Royal Albert Edward Infirmary

I have had a terrible experience with Wigan hospital over the years and now my girlfriend is pregnant, they are as bad as ever. My girlfriend had some bleeding a month ago and was quite worried. After ringing the maternity unit twice as no one called her back the first time, they told her to go in and wait to be checked. 2 and a half hours later, we were told that everyone was too busy in an emergency to see anyone in the waiting room so there would be a couple of hours wait. We just went home. Last night, my girlfriend had palpitations, dizziness, couldn't see properly, couldn't hear properly, had numbness in her hands and legs, a bad headache and we went to A&E after advice from the useless nurse on 111. We waited an hour standing up as there were no available seats, my girlfriend was nearly passing out. Others were being sick. Not even allowed drinks in the waiting area! Some older people were given wheelchairs to wait on. The waiting area at night is also the ambulance entrance so people in emergencies were being wheeled over out feet. Even they all had to wait in a room for hours! When being seen, they checked her blood pressure and someone knocked her off her seat pushing a trolley past. The nurse didn't seem interested in her problems and said the wait would be 3 hours. The nurse said they couldn't refer her to the maternity unit because it wasn't a pregnancy issue. She couldn't stand up for so long so just left. It says online that if you get any of the symptoms she had whilst pregnant, seek urgent care. This was definitely not urgent! Rang the maternity unit today to seek reassurance regarding our baby. They said the nurse would give us a call back. 2 hours later, nothing. She then rang the midwife who said they don't check the baby's heart between scans. They agreed to meet her tomorrow at 9.30am but said if they can't hear a heartbeat, they still can't then refer her for a scan. They do two scans and no help in-between. Thanks a lot Wigan hospital for your incompetence and lack of care. Will be swapping hospitals immediately as I dread to think what the care is like during labour.

Thank you for your posting on Patient Opinion. We were sorry to learn of your experiences as this is not what we would wish to hear from the people who use our services. As a Trust we are very happy to investigate concerns raised and if you and your girlfriend would like to contact the Patient Relations Department we can take this forward on a more formal basis. Kind regards
