"20 week scan ruined."

About: Stoke Mandeville Hospital

Yesterday my husband and I went to have our 20 week scan. As you could imagine, being a first time mum I was feeling rather anxious as we wanted to make sure our baby was doing well. The staff on reception were absolutely lovely and very helpful. However our sonographer completely spoiled what should have been a special moment. Instead I left in tears and full of worry. Reading other comments, it's obvious this sonographer is the same as already mentioned. As soon as we got in, I was put in a position that didn't allow me the best view of the screen, and as the image came on I asked the position of the baby, to which I was snapped at with "erm I won't be doing any commentaries' I tried to ignore that and then was asked to move into another position, which was difficult seeing as I'm getting bigger, the bed was on a slant and the paper underneath wasn't helping. Again I was spoken to as if a child and tutted at during the process, as I tried to sit up to help the movement I was told, 'I didn't say get up, the scan isn't obviously finished yet' by this time, I had hardly seen my baby as he wasn't in the best position for which, I totally understand, however when asked to explain what was being seen and measured, the sonographer spoke in very medical terms, and to the student midwife in there, not my husband and I. We were then told, due to our baby not being in the best position, that we'd have to come back another time, which I though was obviously fair enough, and as they were typing in the medical notes, the sonographer was whispering to the nurse, which made me incredibly anxious and I thought was incredibly rude. I left in tears, not knowing really how well my baby is doing as well as worrying about the whispers. In tears, I returned home and after speaking to my husband and parents, decided this needs to be looked in to. I understand that it is their job, so not as exciting for her, but for all expectant mother's and first time mums, they should be understanding and their people skills really need to improve. Due to the next scan being rescheduled for two weeks time, my husband has kindly booked us a private scan this morning, to settle any worries that this sonographer has caused through their unprofessional actions. I will not be returning to this hospital, which is a shame as the rest of the staff were particularly kind and helpful. Please look into this. I don't wish this experience on anybody else.
