About: Heartlands Hospital

My elderly brother was recently admitted to ward 8 with a broken ankle after a bad fall. He is 75 and lives on his own, and therefore because of the cast on is leg was unable to walk, and so had to stay in hospital. The cleanliness if that is what you can call it is a disgrace. There was a banana skin left on the floor for 24 hours. The tap to one of the basins in the corridor was running constantly. The bed alarm didn't work, neither did the alarm in the toilet or the shower room. He didn't have a "proper wash" or shower in 3 weeks - or his hair washed.Staff shouted to one another across the wards and up and down the corridor. When I asked for information it was as though I had no right to know what was going on. I am the next of kin.He sat in wet pyjamas for most of the day and a wet bed, which I had to change. No one cared. He is totally incontinent and it is very unpleasant for him. He did his best, but no wheelchair was provided for him to get to the toilet. I was totally ashamed of the state of the ward/hospital and the "care" he received.

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for taking the time to post your concerns regarding the care and treatment your brother is receiving whilst in our hospital, and also your comments about the cleanliness on the ward.

I am very concerned and would like to look into this in more detail. Please be assured that we welcome patient and relative feedback and address it in a positive way to achieve good resolution speedily. The issues regarding cleanliness I can highlight immediately to the Ward Manager and our Hospital Services Management, but would need more information regarding your brother's care to enable me to raise this directly with the Senior Nursing Staff.

Can I please ask you to contact me at your earliest convenience either by telephone on 0121 424 0808 or by email: marie.helebert@heartofengland.nhs.uk

I hope this is acceptable and look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Marie Helebert
