"Sorry to dampen everyone's spirits"

About: St Richard's Hospital

From reading all the good reviews of people's experience with this hospital. It would be a shame not to be anything but positive about this hospital but sadly however that's not the case from the way I see it not from my experience anyway. For a start your relatives that accompany you to the hospital have to leave you on your own there, they say that is hospital policy & the ward I finally ended up on a recovery ward I'm sorry to say did not resemble a hospital ward at all, it was more like a supermarket with beds one side & like a pharmacy the other with all their drugs & dressings on display. On arrival I was put into a room in the pre admission area having being left a gown & a sock to wear. I was then told to wait & somebody would be down to escort me down to the theatre. After about 1/2hour, in waltz's the Anaesthetist. I half expected what was coming next as my operation had been cancelled twice before. This Anaesthetist said to me I'm afraid to say your operation has been cancelled yet again as we don't think your fit & well enough for your surgery, unfortunately my blood sugars had risen again from the last time when they did the HBO test & took it over three months. This was because I had come down with a chest infection which had raised my blood sugars as I am a diabetic. The doctor then told me that they were going to have a word with another doctor. Within five minutes three doctors came back in, then the bullying started after the Anaesthetist had finished speaking to me. This doctor, a Orthopaedic Consultant, sat next to me in the room after announcing themself to me & saying they had seen me in the outpatients of Worthing Hospital. This doctor then started to bully me & I felt very intimated as they came into my face, & told me - shouting at me - they were not going to do my Arthroscopy, telling me an Arthroscopy wasn't going to do me any good that I needed a knee replacement telling me I had to work on my blood sugars in getting them down, I had to get my heart fit enough for the surgery & give up the only thing that keeps me sane my cigarettes. Everybody could of saved a lot of time & effort if they had listened to me in the first place instead getting me on what was little more than a fools errand there. Oh & unfortunate for me I suffered a myocardial infarction two yrs ago whereby I had to undergo heart surgery, but let me also say this heart surgery gave me a new lease of life & made me feel like a new woman again. I still feel today as good as I felt after I had my surgery. Oh & I regret old habits die hard I still smoke this sounds like an excuse but isn't I have two learning disability adult son's at home & being on my own can get quite stressful at times trying to deal with everything myself.& why do have to give up everything for them anyway. I am very aware of the Hospitals no smoking policy people can't even smoke outside the hospital now. Putting everything together I am having second thoughts about having my operation at this hospital.

We are very sorry that your procedure was cancelled for medical reasons; this must have been very disappointing and frustrating for you. However, the doctors clearly felt it was unsafe to carry out your treatment and therefore could not proceed. The hospital does have a 'no-smoking' policy throughout the grounds, in line with other hospitals, due to impact on the health of both smokers and non-smokers.
