"Excellent care for a Trimalleolar fracture patient"

I was unfortunate enough to fall down some stairs recently and break my ankle in three places! A paramedic was with me within 10 minutes and I was at hospital in A&E being seen to within a few hours of the accident. For late on a Friday evening this was pretty impressive. I was seen to very promptly and was suffering a lot of pain. The doctors were unable (despite a couple of agonising attempts) to manipulate the bones back into position so I was rushed into surgery. From the time they had seen me I only had a 4 hour wait before they performed the necessary surgery to fix my bones up with metal plates and screws. I should at this point probably mention that one of my biggest phobias is (was) medical situations (doctors surgeries and hospitals) just the thought of them used to make me pale and shakey! Finding myself in so much agony however I knew I had to just go with it and let the doctors do their job. Going into surgery the team of surgeons were extremely kind and reassuring. Sadly, my one notable unpleasant experience however was recovery, where the attending nurse was curt and harsh to me rather than soothing and kind. They ignored my pleas for water and was very stern with me and after 12 hours of being strictly nil by mouth, a ton of morphine and painful surgery this was most distressing. Ward 28 though is an entirely different story. The staff were incredible!! I cannot fault them. They were hard pressed and under a lot of strain from having so many patients to attend to and so few healthcare staff available after cutbacks. This, in my opinion, did not alter or cause harm to their ability to deliver timely and respectful care to the patients on the ward. I unfortunately had to stay on the ward for 10 days as I recovered from surgery and worked through various mobility issues with the excellent physio team. The frustration of having to stay in the hospital however was definitely out balanced by the excellent care and kindness I received from the staff on the ward. I will never forget them all! After care so far has been very good also. I was seen promptly when I arrived for my cast change and the orthopaedic specialist who saw to me after my Xray was very positive, approachable and helpful. Overall, my impression of The York Hospital has been one of professionalism, strength, cleanliness, kindness and patience for patients! It has certainly helped remove my deep fear of hospitals! I cannot recommend treatment here enough.
