"Early Pregnancy Unit"

About: St Thomas' Hospital (London)

The staff at the Early pregnancy unit are excellent and treated me with kindness and respect after my last recurrent miscarriage 6 weeks ago. The surgeons were happy to send the 'tissue' away for testing and told me to expect results within 4 weeks. Having suffered emotionally and physically I was gobsmacked to find out that I cannot get my results until the consultant makes an appointment with me - I even chased the lab which was suggested by my doctor and they said the results had been back for a while. I actually went to the hospital today as I was getting no answers and was told the consultant is very busy and no appointment has been scheduled yet. I should receive this in 6 weeks making it 12 weeks from my ERPC just to get an appointment let alone get an answer. I was made to feel as though the care was only offered when I was pregnant and I am expected to just get over it and work to their timescales. There is no aftercare whatsoever and the compassion at the start jas evaporated. It's disgusting to make a woman who's lost her baby wait so long.

Response from St Thomas' Hospital

I am very sorry to learn that you are facing such a long wait for your next appointment. From your comments, it sounds as if you were given this information in an abrupt manner and with little explanation, rather than with the sensitivity that was needed under the circumstances. For this I apologise on behalf of the hospital. I am sure that the Early Pregnancy Unit would welcome the opportunity to investigate what happened on this occasion, to make sure that all frontline staff give news to patient in an appropriate manner in future. It may be that there is information or support that can be given while you wait for your next appointment, which may answer some of your questions and provide reassurance. If you would like to have a conversation about these issues with a member of clinical (medical or nursing) staff but no longer have their direct contact details, I hope you will contact PALS on 020 7188 8801 or at pals@gstt.nhs.uk.
