About: Sunderland Royal Hospital

The past few years have been tough with my Mum being poorly and she has spent alot of time on the cardiology ward which I cannot fault! The staff were great. However around two weeks ago she was scheduled for a operation for a hernia, this was postponed due to complications. She was then scheduled yesterday. Op went fine. However she reuquested that someone rang home to let us all know she was okay, the repsonse of "well you can do it" came! This is highly inappropriate, especially for someone who has just come out of surgery. She arrives back on the ward where we were allowed to see her. Still recovering from the operation she was a little bit confused, I went to ask a nurse (dark blue uniform, so i pressume this was the ward sister) about the operation as no-one had been to speak to my Mum, the repsonse I got was "whats her name? yeah shes fine". This is despite being told there was going to be complications. My mam then wanted me to check her dressing, at this point there was a lot of blood coming through the dressing, onto her gown and onto the bed. Again i went to mention this to the nurse, who stated that this was normal. Working in the NHS as a nurse myself I know that this is not normal! Infact anyone could see that this was not normal. After a telephpne cpnversation with my Mam she stated that no-one had brought her water all day/night. I am highly disappointed in this 'care'. And deeply upset that Nurses still treat families and patients this way!
