Following an accident I needed fairly urgent plastic surgery to my upper and lower lip. Referred from Lancaster I arrived in the middle of the night, was assessed on Ward 4, given temporary wound care and given a bed for the night before an op the following day. I was called at 9.30 a.m. and met the surgeon who was very reassuring. However, an emergency had come in so I had to return to the ward and recalled at 12.30 p.m. A very kind staff nurse talked to me about a similar wound they had had, and showed me their very faint scar. The 4 bedded ward was constantly being cleaned. I could see from the other patients on the ward that demand for nursing care was high and they did the best they could I felt. Nurses, OTs and Physios were constantly in and out of the ward. In the operating theatre all the medics introduced themselves to me and explained their role. The op was under local anaesthetic. The plastic surgeon was excellent and constantly checked I was ok. The theatre sister was both very competent in organising their staff and very kind giving me their hand to squeeze throughout. The surgery was done well & my medical friends tell me so. Thank you Preston. Any room for improvement? I had a whole morning waiting for the op. with nothing to read at all and nothing was available when I asked. It would have been a good distraction.
