"Daughters operaton"

About: Derriford Hospital

My daughter of 4/5 was awaiting her operation to insert grommets into her ears, after waiting over 8 weeks for an appointment we finally had our operation date. The night before the operation we received a phone call cancelling the operation, we were told their was an outbreak on the ward and that someone would be in touch the following day to reorganise the operation. No phone call the next day and when I called they said it had been rebooked for 4 weeks time, so we waited as their were no earlier appointments. Upon arrival 4 weeks later, we had been preparing for the operation when we were told by the staff they were cancelling again?? apparently the surgeon had injured his back but only decided to communicate this to the hospital 1 hour before surgery begins. Once again we were told we would receive a phone call to let us know the rescheduled date, once again we didn't. So we received the further date in the post for 3 weeks time, upon arrival again everything seemed normal, once again we were took into a room and told the operation was being cancelled again.. at which point I refused and insisted that it goes ahead, the reason for the postponement this time was that they had decided to use the recovery suite for children for other patients. So after waiting a good 3 hours my daughter finally had her operation, the staff were quite rude as I insisted it happened, the recovery Nurses attitudes left something to be desired and I had to constantly ask for an update as to when we could go home. All in all a shocking experience for a 4/5 year old and myself, was a complete shambles and frankly I will use another hospital next time for my daughters care.

Good morning,

Please would you be kind enough to contact our PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) Team on 01752 439884 or email plh-tr.PALS@nhs.net.

The PALS team will require additional information from you regarding your daughter's details to ensure they can liaise with the departments to investigate this fully for you.

Best wishes

Genny
