"Consultant needs training in respect"

About: Huddersfield Royal Infirmary

I attended breast clinic today at Huddersfield Royal. For such a sensitive emotive part of personal care, I found the consultant to be the opposite of what patients need at such an anxious time. I was seen three quarters of an hour after my appointment time in a department labeled 'surgical outpatient's. I then waited a further two and half hours for tests and review. Ok this is necessary, but the level of indifference and insensitivity from the consultant was quite shocking. I do believe the Hippocratic oath to say "Treat patients as individuals and respect their dignity: Treat patients politely and considerately. Respect patients' right to confidentiality. Work in partnership with patients: Listen to patients and respond to their concerns and preferences. Give patients the information they want or need in a way they can understand. Respect patients' right to reach decisions with you about their treatment and care. Support patients in caring for themselves to improve and maintain their health". My experience is that the consultant did not observe the above values at all. I left feeling humiliated, treated with lack of respect and dignity, treated with a condescending attitude, and given irrelevant information to my care. This was done with no eye contact from the consultant and with a dismissive attitude. Ok I understand you are tired and repeat the same things a million times per day, but come on... Perhaps take a break and do some training on dignity and respect and have some reflection on your practice and what this means to people. Hey we are human you know .
