My Dad was admitted to this hospital 6 weeks ago with a severe infection as a complication of his diabetes. He suffered multiple organ failure and spent nearly 2 weeks in ICU and HDU. The staff and doctors here were excellent, attentive and considerate to his needs and that of our family. Sadly the rest of the experience has been a real let down and the general level of support he has received on various wards now has been dissatisfying at best. His basic needs have been met, of course, but only just, and I would have expected more. One of the largest areas of concern is the lack of information that is passed on between departments and wards and every time he is moved we have to go back to square one in terms of explaining his needs. One such example - it took 3 weeks and the intervention of his social worker before anyone seemed to take note of the fact that he had dementia. The first ward he was admitted to gave the impression that they simply did not believe me when I told them. There have been so many examples of issues like this during his stay that I can only believe that the problem is systemic rather than down to the odd individual. Regarding his long stay the other major comment would be that the food is appalling. Dad loves his food and we have never had a problem with him under-eating! Unfortunately he often refuses to eat the food he is presented with now and has been put on protein shakes instead, ultimately leading to him having a much reduced appetite and increasing despondency in general. Hopefully he will leave the hospital physically healthier than he went in but sadly his mental health seems to have worsened as a direct result of his stay.
