"Health care, life saving. Catering poor!"

About: Kettering General Hospital

The health care my wife received from A&E staff and the cardiac Unit were second to none and their prompt action and expertise were frankly life saving. Having left home in an ambulance with my wife with a suspected heart attack at 7-30 in the morning, in a massive hurry, barely time to dress, I was totally unequipped for a long stay and eventually my wife having to stay in. My wife is a vegetarian coeliac and understands that food wise she is difficult to accommodate, yet she is a food bat and flourishes on all kinds of fruit, particularly bananas. In the ward by the time she needed lunch fruit was barely available, although an orange and an apple did appear. The same couldn't be said for the 2 shops, where only one sad pale apple was available! As a caterer of 40 years I was appalled at the offering and in this day and age when boxed fruit, with longish sell by dates is available everywhere, is inexcusable. On the positive side, the evening meal was good, with a GF choice but breakfast not so much. A hospital should be aware that offering a slice of frozen GF bread to toast in a toaster used for normal bread is not acceptable due to cross contamination! Your catering manager needs to put a bit more effort into menu choices, they are after all not more expensive so entirely possible.

Thank you for your positive comments about the care your wife received. I will ensure your feedback is shared with the teams who cared for your wife. They will be very pleased to received such positive feedback. I hope your wife is recovering well. Maxine White Speciality Medicine General Manager ----------------- Please accept my apologies that our catering service did not meet your wife’s dietary requirements. Fresh fruit forms part of our menus and is available on both our lunch and supper menus and is also available to order outside of mealtimes via our the nursing staff. I understand that we did provide an apple and orange when requested to do so but I apologise that bananas were not available on that day. Catering can provide breakfast suitable for patients requiring a gluten free diet and regularly provide gluten free alternatives inclusive of cooked breakfasts when we are requested to do so. The catering services and menus are currently being reviewed. I will ensure that your comments and the need to expand choice for coeliac patients, is taken into consideration as part of that review. Once again my sincere apologies. Sue Landon Facilities Manager
