"Patient of St Heliers"

About: St Helier Hospital

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2011, On admission I was seriously ill as the tumour had perforated my bowel, the staff were brilliant. I felt for the young registrar who had to answer my probing questions as to whether it was cancer. During my 6 week stay, I would say that the nursing staff were superb, I also have to say though, that the agency staff were nowhere near as good as the full time staff. It was obvious that there were not enough staff, but that is not a criticism of the hospital, it is just a fact. I am due to have major bowel surgery again, but this time it is elective and will take place at Epsom, I have to say, I am not looking forward to going there, as I know the staff at St Helier and would much rather it was done there. But that is just one of those things. For anyone who has heard bad reports on St Helier, I would say, you cannot believe all that you hear. Each persons perception is different. It would be greaat to see the hospital spruced up a bit, but we all know the money is not there, that does not detract from the excellent standard of care that you receive

Thank you very much for your feedback about your perceptions of our staff. We are currently engaged in a major drive to recruiting more nurses to our wards and would like to assure you that our Epsom teams are just as dedicated and compassionate as those you’ve met at St Helier. We wish you all the best with your upcoming elective surgery!
