"Poor communication and delay with treatment"

About: Solihull Hospital / General medicine

(as a relative),

My father was diagnosed with Prostate cancer in March 2015, he had suffered with his bladder since Nov 2014 and subsequently has had a catheter fitted since then. His bladder problems were the result of an enlarged prostate and bladder stones had formed, this had caused him severe pain when passing water.

He was told that before he could start radio therapy treatment for his cancer he would require TURP procedure. However after waiting 2 weeks for an appointment to come through he heard nothing, so called the consultants office/Secretary who put him into contact with Admissions. They then told him that there was a 'machinery/equipment failure' and that the next two week's of operations were going to be cancelled, there was no uptime for this equipment so my father's procedure would not likely happen until late June early July 2015!

Considering he cannot start his Radiotherapy until he has had TURP, this is an extremely frustrating and worrying time for him and the family.

We are also amazed at the lack of information forth coming from the hospital and consultants, despite making lots of calls we have hit stone wall silence and answering machines, his assigned clinical nurse to whom we have called and left messages with colleagues to call us back has gone days without calling back.

In a stressful period of our lives the handling of the situation has so far not been made any easier by the hospital.

What is wrong with the TURP equipment?

When will it be fixed?

Why is communication poor?
